Creative Writing
Welcome to creative writing! This is a place for students to play with and explore the expressive power of language, to tell the stories that only they can tell, and to stretch their abilities outside of the academic writing that they have become accustomed to doing throughout school. In this class, students will learn a variety of skills and techniques that apply to writing in non-fiction, fiction, and poetic forms. Students will often be in charge of determining which topics they write about, although practice work in class will begin with a given prompt or topic. Students will experience the benefits of regularly sharing their writing with a writing group and, at times, with the larger audience of the class, and they will improve their ability to offer productive feedback to other writers. Students will read published texts and drafts of other writers’ work throughout the semester in order to learn from a variety of mentors who have used the written word to, in one way or another, change the world.
